Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a fantasy musical that was released in 1968. Although the film was made in the 60’s it was actually set in 1910. The age certificate given for this film was a U which means it is suitable for anyone it watch, but it was recommended that children under four shouldn’t watch it. The language is mostly easy to understand for all viewers all though there are some eccentric words used to give a more comedic affect. Even the romance between Truly and Caractacu’s is made to be obvious about the growing feelings between the pair. The names of the characters are also intended for humorous affect aimed at children such as Caractacus, which is a completely eccentric name which would make children laugh. The visual styles used, even though it is a classic and has a ‘vintage’ look to it, the colours are very bright and the costumes are colourful which would be eye catching towards children.
The structure of this film is a linear narrative all scenes follow each other in chronological order. By doing this it makes it much easier for the audience to follow the plot and not get confused about the timeline. The film opens up to see Jeremy and Jemima Potts meeting Truly Scrumptious, the female protagonist, who is taking them home to report their truancy from school to there father. Caratacus. The climax of this film is when; Jeremy and Jemima as well as Grandpa Potts and Lord Scrumptious are all captured by Baroness Bomburst and the Child Catcher. Leaving Truly and Caractacus to free them all with the help of the village children who have been hidden form the Child Catcher. The structure used for this film is typical of the films that children are suited to watch. This is because it simplifies the film for children so they will actually understand what's happening in the film and enjoy it more. Another climax is at the final scene where Caractacus he can’t marry Truly because eh isn’t rich enough, although her dad buys his business off of him for a substantial amount of money allowing him to marry Truly.
The scene I am analyzing is the final scene. This is because it shows the theme of love and it also helps shows how love and some relationships were in the 1910’s. Caractacus tells his children that he cannot marry Truly even though he loves her because of the class difference and he claims he isn’t rich enough. As soon as he gets the money from Lord Scrumptious he quickly finds Truly and tells her that they can get married. The setting of the scene is very true to the emotions they were feeling, it was a very bright day and everything around them seemed lush with colour, i.e the grass, trees and the car itself. There is hardly any sound until right at the end of the scene when the song music comes on, but the revving of the engine can be heard as they are driving, this represents something that brought them together and without Chitty Chitty Bang Bang they wouldn’t be where they are. Close up angles are the most used in this seen, and it has the most amount of affect possible because it allows the views to see both Caractacus’ and Truly’s facial expression love for each other and the happiness of them being able to get married. Also the fact that Caractacus refused to marry Truly because he didn’t have enough money, is very typical of a problem from when the film was set. In the 1910’s it was hard for people from different classes to mix except for in work situations and this film shows that divide.
Good application of terminology has been included to support the textual analysis. The target audience and narrative structure has been carefully considered. Again, reference to codes and conventions is lacking.
