My Three Ideas - More Detailed.

Three Ideas More Detailed.

Idea 1:

There is a teenage girl who is a geek and doesn’t really have any friends, however she dreams of being one of the ‘popular’ girls. She has wanted this for so much of her life, the film begins when she decides that she is going to do something different and make her life change. At the beginning of the film you do see the girl as a geek and it is instantly obvious that she is a ‘nobody’. This can be shown through clips of her isolated from the rest of the class or eating lunch alone and have close ups of her facial expressions making the audience feel sorry for her. A song would take place during this, beginning as a voice over it then moves from present day to her sitting down in her room writing a song and the first song begins. The scene progresses to short snappy shots while the song is still playing of her doing her hair and makeup differently. This then a full shot of her standing there, transformed into someone new. Another shot takes place of her walking into college and signing her name up to the ‘Talent Show’ list, she had decided the night before that this was the way for her to become popular and get her ‘dream boy’. The next shot is of her in a theatre, the spotlight on her, sitting behind the piano, clips of audience members waiting and waiting, and then she begins, the song is a deep moving song and when she finishes it the whole of the audience stand up and cheer, the girl walks off stage shocked. The next day when she’s walking down the road, some of the popular girls come up to her and compliment her on her performance and they begin talking. It then fast forwards to a few months later and she is one of the popular girls, she is with her ‘dream boy’ and she is happy. Bright costumes and big cheesy smiles emphasize her happiness and then to finish it off she sings a big happy song, where everyone joins in and there are flashbacks included of how things have changed and progressed for her.

Idea 2:

My next idea is about a geeky boy who is in love with the ‘most popular’ girl, he does all her homework for her, she takes advantage of him basically and then he decides to pluck up the courage and ask her out. This however is done in a song and infront of her friends. This embarrasses her, so she decides to pull practical jokes on him which make him look even sillier. This is meant to show the more comedic side to musicals, the songs included will be quirky and involve the planning of some of the tricks to be played on him. However while these songs occur from the girl, the boy will begin too but singing a different song which is about how he is not happy, in the same tune. This progresses and there are little snippet scenes of the pranks that she does, this is meant to be funny and intrigue more males into watching a musical. However it doesn’t turn out funny in the end, as it ends with him writing a suicide note and sending it to facebook and the girl he was so in love with, it is all emotional and moving for the audience, however you don’t see the suicide, it just shows flashbacks of him being happy at random times. Sad but nice ending.

Idea 3:

My final idea is a more dark musical, which includes themes of obsession and thriller. It takes a twist of the ‘stereotypical’ love, as this one includes the idea of a gay relationship, where a girl is in love with her best friend who is also girl. The twist of this I think will intrigue a varied audience. In this short film idea, the shots include ones of her just staring at the wall which is covered in photos of the two of them together and some sneaky shots, but showing her beauty making the audience realise why the main girl is in love with her best friend. She sings a song to the photos, as if singing to her and confessing her love for her, during this flashbacks are included of time they have spent together, during this song the camera looks up to the moon and then goes back down and we’re in the best friends room and she’s looking at photos of her and the boy she used to be with as they have just broke up, she sings a sad song about how she misses him. The main girl, gets annoyed at the girl as she keeps talking about her ex, and when she is really angry one night she goes to the ex’s house and threatens to kill him, this goes a bit too far and she actually does. She then goes to her best friends house in a mess and confesses what she did and her love for her. It ends on a cliffhanger not knowing what they would do.

  1. Your ideas would suit feature films rather than 10 minute short filmd so you need to simplify them. For example, your first idea could just begin with the girl walking into the venue to sing but being mocked by everyone. Then have their faces changing as she sings. This will then allow you to focus on her development of friendships. You need to make sure you highlight a uniques selling point for each idea though. I recommend that you look in magazines and newspapers at stories that deal with teen issues. A current issue is the situation of step brothers and sisters falling in love or even adopted chilren finding their real parents and falling in love with a sibling. A musical that tackles such a serious issue could be quite interesting. Amend your ideas though so that they can be told in 10 minutes with full audience engagement.

I don't think that idea 2 will work as a comedy drama though. There is too much going on with the musical aspect as well so scale it back.
