Two Short Film Analysis's

The short film I am analysing is from the 48 Hour Film Project and is called ‘Sincerely’. It is a short musical that has a typical love story in it but done in a very different way. The fact that it’s a love story would attract people to watch because many people who watch musicals like seeing a romance in it. Instead of it being a typical love story it includes a romance between a woman and a man except the man is actually a ghost who haunts her house. By using this unusual spin off of a romance it would keep the audience interested because it’s something different and new. It also involves a love triangle between the main female, her boyfriend and the ghost. This adds more drama to the overall piece. Also being a short film the audience would know that it has to be packed full of stuff because it only has a certain time limit to be done within.

The film is in linear narrative structure which means that the film would be easy to follow. Also if they done it in non - linear way it could get too confusing for the audience. The setting in the short film is very simplistic so the audience would be able to relate to where everything is going on as if they can imagine it happening to themselves. The camera work in this film is really amateur but it also suits the film it’s self and it doesn’t distract people from the film. The clothes worn are very simplistic as well as the colours they are. But it is set in modern day and it’s meant to happen to a normal girl so it suits what the film is going to do. The only exception is the 70‘s clothes worn by the ghost which does give a good comedic affect when first seen. Editing is also done in an amateurish way as you can hear background noise and some distortion it the film, but this is to be expected from such a film. Also the audience know it’s amateur made film so the non professional making of the film doesn’t affect the audience’s viewing. The sound is one of the best parts of the film. The music and songs are really fun to listen to and aren’t really too badly made. Although some minor distortion it’s still good. This would keep an audiences interest because sound and music is the main part of what they are watching the musical for. As it’s a 10 minute film the songs used are only a verse and a chorus although this means a lack of song length, the songs used are short and sweet so the audience wouldn’t lose interest in how short they are. Sincere is a very entertaining short musical film even though it’s only on for a little while it would keep the audience interested from beginning to end.

The short musical film I am going to analyse is another form The 48 Hour Film Project and is called ‘Science’. This story is completely out of the ordinary, it’s about a scientist who wants to make the world a better place by creating clones of some of history’s most influential men, one being Abraham Lincoln. Trying to use comedy it approaches the problem of a science mishap which leads to both clones turning into zombies. Abraham like a typical zombie wants to eat any brain he comes across while the other zombie wants to each people ‘poo’ or as he refers to it ‘doo doo’. The comedy is what is meant to keep the audience entertain, but it is poorly done such as the jokes which are really bland and really not funny. For a short film it has everything a story line would need which the film has to be credited for. The fact that it as a full story line could keep the audience intested.

This short musical is in a typical linear narrative which means it’s easier for the audience to understand, but adding a non linear one may have interested the audience more and made the short film less boring than it already is. Being a musical the songs and music should be one of the most well done things in the short film yet in this they seem to be the worse, the songs themselves are poorly written and the music is bland. Although for 48 hours they shouldn’t have been expected to write a master piece. It is set in one room, where nothing but the image of the people change. Being set in the one room limits the surrounds the audience can see and the room used in this is just plain and white and boring, the scenery gives nothing for the audience would be interested in looking. The people also most wear similar things, all the ‘science’ people wear laboratory clothes while the two clones where clothes similar to what there counterparts wore. One thing that changes is the face of each person as they become a zombie. This would make them laugh and keep them interested the first few times, but quickly becomes very repetitive and boring. The camera work is very normal with mainly middle range shots and a few close ups but the setting they’re in only allows for that kind of camera work. Due to no exciting camera work being used it wouldn’t interest the audience although because it’s normal they wouldn’t find it boring either. This film while only being short is a chore to watch and is hard to get involved in. The audience could be tempted to turn it off at any point. The fact that it’s short may be one of the only reasons it’s watched till the end.
